Collard Greens with Smoked Turkey

A flavorful, home-cooked classic of collard greens and smoked turkey, ready to serve with cornbread or fried chicken.

Ingredients
  

  • Greens & Meat
  • 2 lbs fresh collard greens cleaned & chopped
  • 1 lb smoked turkey wings legs, or drumettes
  • 1 –2 cups shredded smoked turkey added later
  • Seasonings
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 1 tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 –2 tsp red chili flakes to taste
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp seasoned salt adjust to taste
  • 1 chicken bouillon cube or 1 tbsp bouillon powder
  • 1 –2 tbsp sugar optional, reduces bitterness
  • Liquids
  • 6 –7 cups water or chicken broth
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar optional

Method
 

1️⃣ Start the Pot
    In a large Dutch oven, add smoked turkey pieces...
      2️⃣ Add the Collard Greens
        Add chopped collards a handful at a time...
          3️⃣ Simmer Low & Slow
            Cover the pot and cook on medium-low for 1–1.5 hours...
              4️⃣ Add Shredded Turkey
                About 20 minutes before the greens are done...
                  5️⃣ Serve
                    Serve hot with cornbread, fried chicken, baked mac & cheese, sweet potato pie.
