🥧 Southern Sweet Potato Pie

Ingredients Needed

For the Sweet Potatoes

  • 3 large sweet potatoes (about 2 lbs)
  • Water for boiling

Pie Filling

  • 1 ¼ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 stick (½ cup) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup evaporated milk
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (to help filling set)

Pie Crust

  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust (store-bought or homemade)

Directions

1. Cook the Sweet Potatoes

  1. Peel sweet potatoes and cut into chunks.
  2. Add to a pot, cover with water, and boil until fork-tender (about 20 minutes).
  3. Drain and mash until completely smooth.

2. Make the Filling

  1. In a large bowl, add mashed sweet potatoes.
  2. Mix in sugar, melted butter, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger (optional), and salt.
  3. Stir in evaporated milk, whole milk, and flour until smooth and creamy.

3. Fill the Crust

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Pour sweet potato filling into the unbaked pie shell.
  3. Smooth the top with a spatula.

4. Bake

  1. Bake for 55–60 minutes or until the center is set.
  2. Remove from oven and let cool completely before slicing.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve slightly warm or chilled
